US State Department: Up to 5,000 Cuban fighters fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine!

Up to 5,000 Cuban fighters are participating in Russian military operations in Ukraine, according to briefings provided by the Trump administration to Congress.
The Havana regime is said to be providing diplomatic and political support to Moscow, according to the State Department.
Based on a five-page unclassified report sent to the US Congress, Washington estimates that Cuba has significantly contributed to strengthening Russian forces in the war against Ukraine, with thousands of Cuban citizens participating as fighters.
The report says that while there is no public evidence that the Havana government officially sent all the fighters, there is "significant evidence" that the regime was aware of and allowed or facilitated their movement.
"The Cuban regime has failed to protect its citizens from being used as pawns in the Russia-Ukraine war," a State Department spokesperson said, according to Axios.
The report notes that Cubans are one of the largest identifiable groups of foreign fighters supporting Russian military operations.
The document, which was sent to relevant congressional committees on April 8, says that estimates of the number of Cubans fighting in Ukraine range between 1,000 and 5,000, with Ukrainian intelligence agencies claiming that several thousand are deployed directly to the front.
White House pressure is mounting
The report's release comes at a time when the White House is intensifying pressure on the Cuban government, trying to bring about a change of leadership in Havana, while at the same time imposing a significant blockade on oil shipments to the country.
Senator Ted Cruz stated that "the Cuban regime is undermining American interests around the world," expressing his belief that a possible replacement of the current leadership would be a positive development for the United States and its allies.
The presence of Cuban citizens in the war was revealed as early as 2023, when a report reported that Russia was recruiting Cuban citizens to bolster its forces on the Ukrainian front. The government in Havana subsequently announced the launch of a criminal investigation, arguing that human trafficking is strictly prohibited by the country's law, and later announced that criminal prosecutions had been opened in nine cases involving 40 defendants.
However, the State Department appears cautious about the credibility of the relevant reports, noting that the country's judicial system is characterized by limited transparency, which makes it difficult to verify the allegations.
In October last year, the US State Department requested the presence of Cuban fighters to bolster its diplomatic response to a UN resolution that would have lifted the US embargo against Cuba. According to reports, Washington had informed other countries at the time that up to 5,000 Cubans were taking part in military operations in Ukraine.
At the same time, the Trump administration is reportedly considering ways to remove Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel from power. He recently stated in a television interview that his country would continue to resist pressure.
"We will defend ourselves and, if we have to die, we will die," he said.
