The arrest and release of Federica Mogherini, what she testified for 10 hours at the European Public Prosecutor's Office

Federica Mogherini, the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Vice-President of the European Commission, was questioned for ten hours by the European Public Prosecutor's Office in Brussels about the management of the European Diplomatic Academy at the College of Europe in Bruges.
After questioning, Mogherini was released and received her passport, allowing her to move freely in and out of Belgium.
The investigation also involves two other Italians: Ambassador Stefano Sannino, Secretary General of the EEAS, and Cesare Zegretti, manager of the College.
According to the indictment, Sannino may have provided premature information about the tender, favoring the College.
Mogherini has denied any allegations, stressing that " all information was public and the procedure was fully transparent. There were no privileges or access to confidential information. The purchase of the building on Spanjaardstraat, worth 3.2 million euros, was a clear and necessary decision, without the need for special information ."
The Diplomatic Academy is now operational at the College, with a four-year agreement (2024-2028) entrusting its management to Mogherini and the College.
The project has a total value of approximately one million euros, with around 700 thousand euros earmarked directly for Bruges, including feasibility studies and training activities.
Mogherini has defended every step of the process, underlining that the main goal was to create a better diplomatic class for the European Union.
