Beijing-Pyongyang Axis/ Xi Jinping visits North Korea after 7 years, Kim Jong Un

Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have strongly reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen and strengthen bilateral relations. This realignment of forces was sealed during a landmark summit held in Pyongyang.

This diplomatic move marks Xi Jinping's first visit to North Korea in seven years, coming at a delicate moment of high geopolitical tensions and new realignments in the region.

Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol Ju, personally welcomed the Chinese president and China's first lady, Peng Liyuan, at Pyongyang International Airport.

Afterwards, an official welcoming ceremony was organized in the center of the North Korean capital, demonstrating the importance of this meeting:

-A grand military parade was held with the participation of thousands of citizens.

-The central square was decorated with the flags of both countries and giant portraits of Xi and Kim.

-Numerous banners were unfurled extolling the friendship, unity, and close alliance between Beijing and Pyongyang.

During the bilateral meeting, Xi Jinping expressed China's full willingness to expand bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as trade, agriculture, construction and technology. He emphasized the necessity of strengthening strategic cooperation to safeguard the sovereign and defense interests of both countries.

On the other hand, Kim Jong Un described the Chinese leader's presence as living proof of unbreakable ties. He stated firmly that deepening friendship between North Korea and China remains an "unchangeable strategic choice" for Pyongyang.

This summit comes just a few months after their last meeting in Beijing, where the two leaders attended a military parade alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world dignitaries.

Xi's visit to Pyongyang follows his recent meetings in Beijing with Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the Chinese leader is expected to travel to the United States in September for another meeting with Trump.

According to geopolitical analysts, Beijing is aiming to regain its decisive role and exert strong influence over North Korea, especially at a time when Pyongyang has shown great rapprochement and significantly strengthened military and diplomatic cooperation with Moscow.

China remains North Korea's most important economic partner and main diplomatic supporter. This summit takes on even more symbolic value as this year, 2026, marks the 65th anniversary of the signing of the mutual defense treaty between the two countries.
