PHOTO/ The waters of the Artificial Lake of Tirana are polluted with poisonous cyanobacteria

During the last days, the waters of the Artificial Lake of Tirana have undergone changes in color, where a green layer and a characteristic smell of algae can be clearly distinguished.
Aleko Miho, professor in the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and environmental activist, explains that this is a layer of blue-green algae, a genus of cyanobacteria often found in the freshwater phytoplankton community.

Professor Miho added that after the microscopic analysis of a water sample taken from the Artificial Lake, it was discovered that it was a bloom of the cyanobacterium "Microcystis aeruginosa", among other things known as a type of poison.
"These blooms are a consequence and signals of heavy pollution with nutrients, coming from untreated urban waters, but not only, which accumulate continuously in this lake," writes Professor Miho in a public reaction on Facebook.

Expert Miho explains that this phenomenon consumes the oxygen dissolved in the water, creating anaerobic conditions and, as a result, causes the massive death of aquatic animals and plants that are in the contaminated waters.
He called on the Municipality of Tirana to urgently remove the discharges and accumulation of waste water from the lake.

"It remains a challenge to collect and treat waste water for the entire basin of Tirana, as a necessity for the quality of human life and the entire living world," emphasized Professor Miho./ BIRN
