At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting in a Johannesburg suburb, South Africa, as a massive manhunt was launched for the perpetrators.
The deadly attack took place in the Cleveland area, where a group of armed men attacked an informal settlement and opened fire on residents in different parts of the camp.
According to a police statement, more than ten suspects reportedly got out of a Toyota vehicle near a gas station in the area.
" The suspects entered the residence from two different entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple points, before fleeing in the same vehicle ," police said.
Authorities received a call about an "armed attack in progress" at around 11:10 p.m. and a large force of police and emergency services responded to the scene.
8 men and 3 women were killed at the scene, while another man later died from his injuries in hospital.
At least nine injured people were taken to various medical facilities in the area for treatment after suffering gunshot wounds.
The motive for the attack remains unknown. Police said the cause of the massacre was under investigation.
