The redevelopment of the Congress Palace, the project of Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd wins! A 255-meter tower is added to the existing building
The project by the prestigious Swiss studio Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd has been announced as the winner in the international competition for the redevelopment of the Palace of Congresses.
According to the winning project, the intervention in the Palace of Congresses will be minimal, with a focus on preserving the architectural and historical identity of the existing building, adapting it to contemporary requirements for large events and activities.
In parallel, the project envisages the construction of a multifunctional tower with a height of up to 255 meters, which will be functionally connected to the current facility.
The chairwoman of the jury, Mari Randsborg, said that the selected project has the potential to make a significant contribution to the development of Tirana and create value for future generations.
"The jury calls on the team to consider the height of the tower, its location with everything around it, as well as the space above, which seemed a bit informal and small. We hope that as a team you will collaborate with the city in order to improve and expand the public spaces," said Randsborg.
During the presentation of the projects, Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that the goal is to transform the Palace of Congresses while preserving its unique character. “It is time for transformation, but while preserving its identity,” he said during the event.
Herzog & de Meuron is a studio based in Basel, Switzerland, and the author of dozens of iconic international projects.
