Sali Berisha's great isolation assembly

Sali Berisha's great isolation assembly

The Democratic Party Assembly once again confirmed Sali Berisha's deep political isolation, both at home and abroad. A party that claims to govern Albania failed to bring in any significant personality from Albanian or international politics, any important figure to convey a message of confidence for its future.

On the contrary, desperation was evident after every greeting. Instead of support from influential figures, the assembly was content with the participation of a Greek MP, a Macedonian MP from a political force accused of taking positions against the rights of Albanians, and a former American congressman. A level that seems far from expectations for a political force that claims to take over the country.

The only name with some political weight was Peter Beyer. However, he also returned to the statements of 2022, when he had emphasized that there could be no cooperation with persons declared "non grata". In 2025 he expressed support for the DP, but it seems that, like many other European politicians, he had believed that after losing the elections Berisha would leave and pave the way for a new direction.

Today the situation is completely different. Berisha is not met by important international figures, he does not receive congratulations or public support from major European political families. It is enough to remember that in 2021, Lulzim Basha was officially congratulated by the European People's Party, even with publications on social networks. Today, such a thing is completely missing for Berisha.

The atmosphere of the assembly was more like the plenums of the Labor Party, where any critical voice was absent and everyone had to appear happy with the party and its leader. Instead of reflecting on the defeat, there was only praise and confirmation of the status quo.

But the clearest signal that the DP risks becoming smaller after this assembly was the decision to crack down on any alternative voices within the party. Berisha attacked and politically excluded those who participated in Ervin Salianji's meetings, showing that the priority is not the expansion of the opposition, but absolute control of the party.

This creates the impression that Berisha is primarily interested in keeping the DP logo and structures for his own personal battle. The fact that the party is shrinking politically, losing support and becoming less and less relevant in the international arena does not seem to bother him.

Berisha knows that with British and American sanctions, his chances of being considered a reliable partner by the West are minimal. The British authorities themselves have emphasized that the measures against him are based on legal procedures and not on political decisions. Under these conditions, the prospect of him returning as prime minister or securing serious international support seems almost impossible.

In the end, this assembly did not provide a new vision for the Albanian opposition. On the contrary, it gave the image of a party closed in on itself, focused on the political survival of a single man. And the more the DP identifies with the personal fate of Sali Berisha, the more it risks moving away from its role as the main alternative to governance in Albania. /Alfapress.al
