''From TikTok, to knives''/ Teenagers are killed near

TikTok is to blame for the murders of teenagers in the country. This was the prime minister's reasoning last year after the murder of 14-year-old Martin Cani just a few meters from school. To avoid these tragedies, the prime minister decided to "banish" the social network from our country.

But as it marks almost a year since TikTok was shut down in Albania, another teenager has lost his life after being stabbed by a peer. The altercation took place on November 25th, outside the “Dom Nikollë Kaçorri” school in Durrës. During the altercation, the 14-year-old stabbed his peer, 15-year-old Erion Boba, four times, seriously injuring him in the chest, near the heart.

He was initially taken to Durrës Hospital, and then to QSUNT, where he remained in intensive care for several days, but could not survive the injuries he sustained.

The fight started with a comment on social media and constant insults at school, which then escalated into a knife wound, which later proved fatal for the minor. Meanwhile, the perpetrator has expressed remorse before the investigative group.

" A few days ago we got stuck on a comment on TikTok. That's where it started. We argued over comments. Then we agreed to meet. On our part to clarify. We knew that they would come with some friends. We also became a group. We agreed to meet somewhere near his house. We went there, we met. They had taken measures for any possible conflict, and so had we.

We started arguing: who are you, who am I! We got into a massive fight. They shot us with hard weapons. I pulled out the knife. More to scare him. I shot in self-defense. Because he was bigger and he was hitting me. I hit him several times, not to kill or injure him, but to scare him. I am very sorry that it ended this way. I did not want it to go like this. They also shot us with hard weapons. I regret it very much. I did not want it to go like this ,” the minor is reported to have said.

Family: During son's surgery at Durres hospital, the lights went out

According to family members, during the surgical intervention in Durrës, the electricity was cut off, forcing the medical staff to interrupt the operation and request urgent transport to Tirana. They say that this situation, together with the lack of hospital infrastructure, including an elevator for emergencies, has seriously affected the deterioration of the minor's condition.

" In the Durrës hospital, shame on God, the lights were out, so they took him to Tirana urgently. The boy's condition worsened, because we have a friend of the house and we are aware of everything."

"Yes. This really happened. Like in the Middle Ages. Operation without lights, but everyone will cover something up, from the killers, the police, the hospital, the media, everyone is lying that they weren't there. For 5 days, no one. The doctors there tried, but the conditions were fatal, there wasn't even an elevator for emergencies ," the deceased's aunt told the media.

The rise in violence among teenagers: A worrying phenomenon

But as we mentioned above, the murder of Erion Boba is just one of many cases of violence among teenagers that have occurred in Albania in recent years. A recent case is the murder of 14-year-old Erald Xhejo by his peer Enedio Guri in the village of Pirg in Maliqi, on August 14, 2025 .

In 2024 , another shocking event was the murder of 14-year-old Martin Cani by a peer, following a fight that started on social media. This case prompted the Albanian government to take drastic measures, deciding to close TikTok for a year, in an attempt to reduce the platform's potential impact on young people.

In 2024 , four young men were involved in a tragic incident in Shkozë, where after a fight between two groups, 18-year-old Aurelio Dervishi was stabbed as soon as he got out of his car and died on the way to the hospital. Investigations revealed that the conflict had started over a minor girl, while the four perpetrators acted in collaboration, using hard objects and sharp weapons to attack the victim.

Another serious incident occurred on May 16, 2024 in Gramsh, where four juveniles faced justice for the murder of 15-year-old Fatjon Bici , who was stabbed near a school during a clash between two groups of young people. In addition to the murder, they are also accused of attempted murder of two other juveniles and illegal possession of cold weapons, risking up to 15 years in prison.

The most serious fact is that many of these killings have occurred right next to schools, in places where students should be learning and building their futures, not losing their lives. This is a grave institutional and moral failure for a state that fails to protect the most vulnerable.

How many more cases need to occur for the Ministry of Education and responsible institutions to understand that school can no longer be a place where conflict begins, but where respect and coexistence should be taught?
