"Tirana is my objective", Alimehmeti rules out running for DP leader

Ilir Alimehmeti, a member of the Democratic Party, has confirmed that his political ambition remains the race for the Municipality of Tirana, excluding any possibility of running for leadership positions within the party.

In an interview with "Report TV", he emphasized that this is an early and unchanged position.

"I am not running for president of the DP. Nor as Secretary General. I have already announced my availability for the Municipality of Tirana in 2022. I am coherent with the decisions. The decision-makers will decide,"  said Alimehmeti.

Alimehmeti also spoke about the Democratic Party's recent protest on April 17, emphasizing that the participation should be seen in a broader context and not as an isolated episode.

"The protest should not be taken in isolation, it is not a single episode. We deal with minor episodes and lose sight of the big thing. We live in a troubled community today ," he said.

Alimehmeti raised concerns about a climate of fear that, according to him, affects citizens' engagement with the opposition, also mentioning the reluctance to provide public support.

"If we are in a situation where people who meet us on the street say I'm afraid to like you on Facebook because they see us. The fact is that only the DP is on the ground. It is the major opposition party. The young people have awakened them. It is also the duty of the opposition to inspire, even with smaller numbers much more has been achieved,"  he declared.

While speaking about the future of the Democratic Party, Alimehmeti stated that the internal electoral process is expected to bring about a new leadership structure, which will determine the strategic direction of the party.

"I think the DP needs to grow. It needs to grow beyond the DP, much more than that. It needs to go beyond itself. We have an electoral process that will reproduce a leadership structure that will set the strategy and the line on how to move forward,"  said Alimehmeti.
