Protests over Rama's resignation enter 15th day, Bulgarian MEP: The government must listen to the voice of the citizens! We are monitoring every development

Citizen protests that have been taking place in Tirana for 15 days against strategic investment projects, legal changes for protected areas, and against the government and Prime Minister Edi Rama have also attracted the attention of European institutions.
Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev, who is in Albania with a delegation from the Bulgarian Parliament, spoke about these developments.
Kovatchev stated that the European Parliament is closely following the situation in Albania, while emphasizing that the country has made progress on the path towards European integration.
Asked whether the massive protests taking place in the country could affect the integration process, the MEP said that resolving the situation is up to Albanian politics, but underlined the importance of respecting European standards.
"We are monitoring every development very closely. This is certainly up to the political class in Albania to resolve and follow all standards, especially ecological ones, with all the investments that need to be made. We are not interfering in this part, but of course there will be a text in the progress report related to the fulfillment of all laws and standards related to ecology, but also to regional development and tourism ," said Kovatchev.
Commenting on the protests, which have now entered their 15th day, he stated that citizens have the right to be heard, as long as the protests remain peaceful.
"I want to say that it is good to hear the voice of the people, if everything is calm and peaceful. And this is also our call to all parties in power and those in the opposition: to be calm, to listen to each other and to find the best solution for the citizens."
"For the citizens of Albania, the best thing is to join the European Union as soon as possible and enjoy our European family together, in this very challenging time for the world. We have many geopolitical problems around us and Albania is a very good ally in NATO, and now, very soon, in the European Union," the Bulgarian MEP declared.
When asked what the Albanian government should do in the face of these protests, Kovatchev gave a clear message: "The government should listen to the people and follow all legislation and all environmental standards, which I am sure will also be in the European Parliament text. But, we in the European Parliament will not interfere in the internal politics of Albania and call for good cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition parties. Thank you . "
