Kosovo sends humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip

A ship carrying humanitarian aid from Kosovo for Palestinians in war-torn Gaza has departed from the port of Mersin in Turkey towards the Palestinian enclave, acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced on Saturday.
In a Facebook announcement, Kurti said that the shipment worth 500 thousand euros includes tents, food packages, blankets and 158 thousand rations of hot food for residents in need.
Kurti's government had allocated the money for this humanitarian shipment in January, but their delivery became possible only now, Kurti said, after the ceasefire reached in October, with the mediation of United States President Donald Trump.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas - the group designated a terrorist organization by the US and other powers - has been almost fully implemented since October, but the war has destroyed much of Gaza's infrastructure and living conditions are extremely difficult.
United Nations and Palestinian officials said at least 300,000 new tents are urgently needed for the estimated 1.5 million people who remain displaced within the enclave.
Kurti said that this humanitarian aid "represents Kosovo's commitment as part of international solidarity and our commitment to supporting the civilian population that is facing enormous difficulties in Gaza."
The Gaza War was triggered by the October 7, 2023 attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 others.
Israel's retaliatory war in Gaza has since killed over 70,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities./ REL
