Mayor Erion Veliaj's lawyers have asked the Constitutional Court to expedite the review of the lawsuit to repeal the prison arrest measure, which they consider unconstitutional and which causes damage to the capital due to the mayor's absence from duty.

The case against Veliaj and the other defendants is in the preliminary hearing phase, where it is expected to be decided whether or not the SPAK file will go to trial.

The request to the Constitutional Court for acceleration comes two weeks after Erion Veliaj, arrested since February, requested the annulment of the decisions of the lower courts that approved his detention.

The Constitutional Court has not yet set a date to review the request, while the same court previously ruled in favor of Veliaj, reinstating him and thus repealing the decision of the Council of Ministers.

In Friday's hearing, Veliaj requested that he be given real access to the materials in the file, which until now SPAK has only made available to the defense on USB, when there is not even a computer in prison. Veliaj accused the justice system of double standards, as the materials have been made available to former President Meta and other defendants.

The next preliminary hearing, where Veliaj is expected to defend himself, will be held on January 5. SPAK accuses the mayor of corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and smuggling items into prison.
