Armed attack on US patrol in Syria, 6 injured

A joint patrol of US and Syrian forces has been attacked by a gunman in the Syrian city of Palmyra. The attacker took the soldiers by surprise, opening fire and wounding at least six people.
According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, at least four American soldiers and two Syrians were wounded in the attack. Some of the American soldiers are reported to be in critical condition and have been rushed to hospital.
It is learned that American helicopters have intervened to evacuate the wounded, transporting them to the American military base in Al-Tanf, near the border with Iraq.
Earlier, two Syrian officials told the international agency Reuters that a joint column of Syrian and American forces, part of the US-led coalition against the Islamic State, had come under fire.
American forces have been deployed in northeastern Syria for about a decade, as part of operations to support Kurdish forces and the fight against the terrorist organization ISIS.
