Shocking report by the Albanian Supreme Audit Office: Patients 6 months without chemo, doctors fight cancer with 2014 protocols

The State High Audit Report on Oncology Drugs at the QSUT has revealed shocking facts about the treatment of patients with tumor diseases at the Oncology Hospital. According to the audit, many patients have been left without chemotherapy for periods of up to 6 months, due to a lack of drugs and the failure of the supply system.
In some cases, the nearly 200-page report states, patients have gone months without receiving any chemotherapy doses, while hundreds of others have received treatment intermittently, outside of any medical protocol. “Shortages have been repeated, and in some supply contracts, the period without medicines has lasted up to 6 months,” the KLSH document states. During verifications at the Central Pharmacy at the QSUT, long periods were also found where the stock of medicines was zero, both in the hospital’s central warehouse and in the pharmacy that directly supplies the oncology wards.
“Cases were identified where the situation was 0 for periods longer than 1 week, risking the treatment of patients,” – says the report.
The Supreme State Audit goes even further, emphasizing that most of the medical protocols used today in Oncology are more than a decade old. “A significant part of the clinical practice protocols at the University Hospital Center 'Mother Teresa' date from 2014, with a lack of systematic updates during this period,” – quotes the SAI.
According to audit experts, the use of old guidelines reduces the quality of treatment and can lead to the use of outdated therapies, which are no longer in line with European Union and World Health Organization standards. The Supreme State Audit Office is asking the Ministry of Health to establish a working group to urgently update medical protocols and ensure a stable supply of drugs, stressing that repeated shortages “have put patients’ lives at risk.”
