Elected Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei makes first public statement:

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, recently appointed leader of Iran, has vowed to continue blocking oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a written statement read on state television, Mojtaba Khamenei also warned of continued Iranian attacks on neighboring Gulf states as long as the American bases they host remain open and serve as launching points for attacks against his country.

In the statement, he reiterated that the attacks on Gulf countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait, are not offensive in nature, as he underlined his country's "friendship" with its neighbors, but justified them as essential acts of "self-defense."

The new Khamenei has also vowed to avenge the deaths of Iranian "martyrs" and promised further attacks against American and Israeli "enemies."

Khamenei has yet to appear publicly since his appointment, with reports from Iran suggesting he may have been seriously injured in the US-Israeli attacks on Tehran that resulted in the death of his father last Saturday.
