Severe fire situation in Izmir, evacuation of residents begins

A fire that started Thursday evening in the western region of Turkey's Izmir province has spread rapidly due to strong winds, prompting evacuations and extensive firefighting efforts.
During the day, due to strong winds with a speed of about 80 kilometers per hour, the planes for a while could not intervene in the area of Yamanlar Karatepe, in Karsikaya.
Despite the presence of five aircraft, 15 helicopters, 10 water supply vehicles, 4 bulldozers and 4 ground crews, the fire spread in an area covered mostly by bushes.
Evacuations were ordered in several neighborhoods and an animal shelter in the area was also evacuated.
The roads leading to the affected areas were closed, while the gendarmerie and police implemented security measures.
The fire reached the industrial area of Ornekkoy, spreading to numerous businesses, including a recycling, marble, cable, woodworking company and furniture factory.
As the wind died down in the afternoon, helicopters and planes resumed work, dropping water intensively on areas where the flames were most concentrated.
The fire continues to burn in forest areas within the borders of Karsiyaka, Bayrakli and Cigli districts, affecting both residential and industrial areas.
Thick smoke is visible from different parts of the province, while several houses and vehicles near the forests have been damaged by the spreading flames.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli left the capital Ankara to monitor firefighting efforts in the Aegean province of Izmir.
