US Secretary of State Rubio: Gaza peace talks do not mean the end of the war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview today that the ongoing negotiations between Hamas and Israel are not yet the end of the war.

He explained that the creation of a governing body for Gaza "cannot be done in a few days," but assured that there is a plan in place.

Asked by journalist Kristen Welker whether the peace talks marked the end of the war in Gaza, Rubio replied:

"Not yet. There's still work to be done."

His statements come as Israel and Hamas appear to be moving closer to implementing the peace plan proposed by Donald Trump.

"Everyone has agreed, including Israel, that at some point in the process, Gaza will be run by a Palestinian technocratic group that is not Hamas and does not include terrorists, with the help and guidance of an international consortium, such as the Peace Council," Rubio said, reiterating the spirit of the plan.

He said the talks are now focused on practical issues of implementing the agreement, such as the timeline for the release of hostages and the creation of a new Palestinian leadership.

"A way must be found to form a technocratic Palestinian leadership that is not linked to Hamas and terrorism, with the help of the international community," the US minister stressed. "And at the same time, disarm the armed groups that would try to attack Israel again."
