Digital Summit: Region takes bold steps towards an integrated digital future

Skopje, 2 October 2025 – The seventh edition of the Western Balkans Digital Summit (WBDS), co-hosted by the Government of North Macedonia and the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), was held today in Skopje, reaffirming the region’s commitment to digital transformation, cooperation and European integration.
In his keynote address, RCC Secretary General Amer Kapetanović highlighted the progress achieved and the priorities ahead. “Digitalization is not just an objective, but a transformative force. The success of our ‘Roam Like at Home’ regime shows what the region can achieve when working together. Now we need to take the next steps: building interoperable digital wallets, advancing trust services, aligning with the EU digital framework and ensuring that our young people and businesses have the tools to thrive in the digital age,” said Kapetanović.
Opening the summit, the Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, underlined the importance of investments in digitalisation for the prosperity and stability of the region. He said that once people start to see concrete results from the digital transformation, trust grows and a momentum is created, which drives further progress and innovation.
The partners also spoke at the summit: Renate Nikolay, Deputy Director-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology at the European Commission; Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU); Thomas Jarzombek, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Digitalisation and Modernisation of Government; and Svyatoslav Senyuta, Regional Head of Government Solutions at Visa. They stressed the importance of regional cooperation, EU alignment and partnerships with the private sector to advance the digital agenda.
During the Summit, Danijela Gačević, Head of the RCC Programme Department, moderated the ministerial panel titled “Digitalisation as a Standard – Making Public Administration Work for All”, which will be attended by ministers and senior officials from across the Western Balkans, including: Delina Ibrahimaj, Minister of Economy and Innovation of Albania; Marash Dukaj, Montenegrin Minister of Public Administration; Stefan Andonovski, Minister of Digital Transformation of North Macedonia; Slaviša Antić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Technology of Serbia; Getoar Mjeku, Kosovo Deputy Minister of Economy; and Almir Badnjević, Director of IDDEEA of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
