"The war is over", Israel signs the agreement!

24 hours after negotiators announced the achievement of an agreement on the first phase of Donald Trump's plan for Gaza, the Israeli government gave the green light to the deal, paving the way for a suspension of attacks on Gaza within 24 hours.

According to the plan, the fighting will end and all military operations, including aerial and artillery bombardments, will cease.

The Israeli cabinet's ratification of the ceasefire deal on Friday morning means the hostages must be released within 72 hours in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The first phase also calls for the withdrawal of Israeli troops to a line that will leave them in control of about 53% of the coastal enclave.

But, the withdrawal must also be completed within 24 hours.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "We are at a historic moment. For the past two years we have fought to achieve our goals, one of which is the return of all hostages; dead and alive. And now we are achieving that goal. We could not have achieved this without the extraordinary help of President Trump and his team, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner."

Hamas' exiled leader, Khalil Al-Hayya, said he had received assurances from the United States and other negotiators that the war was over. Twenty Israeli hostages are believed to be still alive in Gaza, while 26 have died and the fate of two is unknown. Hamas has suggested that recovering the bodies of the victims may take slightly longer than releasing the live hostages.

Once the ceasefire takes effect, trucks carrying food and medical aid will flood into Gaza to help hundreds of thousands of civilians sheltering in tents after their homes were destroyed. If implemented, the agreement would bring the parties closer to peace than any other effort to stop the war.

While the development has cheered residents in Gaza and Israel, there are fears the plan will not work, with some of its key points remaining disputed. Trump has said he will visit the region on Sunday. He is likely to attend a signing ceremony in Egypt.

Israel has invited him to deliver a speech to Parliament, which would be the first by a US President since 2008.
