France investigates reports of drones on nuclear submarine base

French prosecutors have launched an investigation after drones were suspected of flying over a nuclear submarine base on the Atlantic coast late Thursday, a prosecutor in charge of military affairs in the city of Rennes said on Friday.

Jean-Marie Blin said the drone flights were reported from around 7pm on Thursday until 1am on Friday.

He denied media reports that the gendarmerie had fired on suspected drones, but said they had taken "precautionary measures."

Drone flights, mostly of unknown origin, have been recorded in European airspace in recent months.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called these airspace violations "hybrid warfare."

Russia regularly denies accusations that it is responsible for these incursions.

The Ile Longue base in northwest France is where the nuclear-powered submarines are deployed, according to the French navy website.

Each submarine is equipped with 16 ballistic missiles carrying several nuclear warheads.

Blin said the investigation is currently focused on whether there were indeed drones in the sky.

"Some of the reports may be completely fabricated, others are much more serious."

He said that reports came from various people who were at the scene, including gendarmes and military officers./REL
