Suspicions of abuse of agricultural funds, Greek Parliament lifts immunity of 13

The Greek Parliament has approved by a large majority the request to lift the immunity of 13 MPs, whose names are mentioned in two new files of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, for mismanagement of subsidies by its payment agency OPEKEPE.

The European chief prosecutor this month asked the Greek parliament for immunity for 13 active lawmakers from the ruling New Democracy party, including former agriculture and civil protection ministers, in two separate files, so that they can be investigated for their alleged roles in the scheme.

Greek lawmakers cannot be investigated by the judiciary unless parliament votes to lift their immunity.

They have denied any wrongdoing, but, addressing parliament ahead of Wednesday's vote, they said they agreed to have their immunity lifted so the investigation can continue.

288 MPs participated in the roll call vote, while 9 were absent. The results for each case show almost unanimous support for lifting immunity, with the “for” votes ranging from 285 to 287 and only 1 or 2 “against” votes in each case.

According to Greek media, at least 10 of the MPs involved voted in favor of lifting their immunity, as well as that of other colleagues.
