Chernobyl nuclear power plant's protective shield damaged

The United Nations Atomic Energy Agency has announced that the protective shield at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is inoperable, due to damage caused by drones.

Ukraine has blamed Russia for the attacks. The shield, known as the "Safety Convoy" or the Ark, was built after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 to stop the spread of radiation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is a UN agency, announced last week that a drone attack.

IAEA Director Rafael Grossi stated that the shield had lost its primary safety function, but that there was no permanent damage to the containment structure or monitoring system.

He stressed that some repairs have been carried out, but a comprehensive intervention is also necessary to prevent further degradation and ensure long-term nuclear safety.
