Anthropic co-founder: AI could replace human labor on a massive scale

One of the co-founders of American artificial intelligence company Anthropic, Chris Olah, has warned that there is a "real possibility" that AI will replace human labor on a very large scale, requiring stronger oversight from governments, religious leaders and civil society.
Speaking at the Vatican on Monday during the presentation of Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical on artificial intelligence, Olah argued that the development of AI cannot be left solely to technology companies.
"There is a real possibility that artificial intelligence will replace human labor on a very large scale," he said.
"If this happens, supporting those displaced from the labor market will be a moral obligation of historic proportions," added Olah, who was seated alongside Pope Leo XIV during the event.
According to him, companies developing the most advanced artificial intelligence models operate under strong commercial, geopolitical and personal pressures, which do not always align with the broader interest of society.
"Every major artificial intelligence lab operates within a system of incentives and constraints that can sometimes conflict with doing the right thing," Olah stated, noting that even well-intentioned researchers are affected by these dynamics.
For this very reason, he argued that greater external oversight over the development of AI is needed, including governments, civil society organizations, and moral authorities.
