Italy with Trump's invitation to the World Cup? Italian officials themselves are against it: We would feel offended

In the last 24 hours, a proposal has emerged that Donald Trump's special envoy for global partnerships, Paolo Zampolli, has made for Italy's inclusion in the 2026 World Cup. Various media outlets have reported that he has asked Trump to push Infantino to replace Iran with Italy, taking as a trigger the war in the Middle East and the Italian tradition in such tournaments.
But of course, such an idea has not been received with enthusiasm by the sports community, nor by the Italians themselves. The highest figures in sports in the country have come out against this proposal. The first was the president of the Italian Olympic Committee, Luciano Buonfiglio. "First of all, I don't think it's possible. Second, I would feel insulted. You have to deserve it to go to the World Cup," he said.
Even the Minister of Sports, Giovanni Andrea Abodi, was of the same opinion. "An invitation for Italy to the World Cup? It is not appropriate, you qualify on the field of play," he said, closing the issue without opening it properly.
