Deschamps defends Mbappe: He's not selfish, he doesn't have to run 11

France coach Didier Deschamps has come to the defense of his captain Kylian Mbappe, dismissing claims that the forward is "selfish" or that he does not contribute enough physically to the team.

During his speech on Tuesday at the Laval Sports Journalism Festival, Deschamps was asked by a journalist who suggested that the Les Bleus star is the only one who doesn't run enough in the squad.

The French coach initially responded with humor: "The goalkeeper is in the same situation," Deschamps said jokingly, before giving his more serious stance.

"That's your interpretation. I don't think that's the case, although it's true that some run less than others. If you want him to run at least 11 kilometers per game, don't bother, he won't do it," he said.

Deschamps went on to highlight Mbappé's influence and role in France, both on and off the pitch.

"Kylian either loves it or hates it, but the young people adore him. You have created the image of a selfish and individualistic boy. Of course, a striker has to be a little selfish, but I can assure you that in the French national team he behaves like a captain," Deschamps concluded.
