EU, US and Japan sign agreement on critical minerals

The European Union, the United States and Japan have today signed a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at improving the sustainability of supply chains for critical minerals.

These minerals are currently dominated by China, envisioning a broader agreement with other countries that could include minimum prices and subsidies when there are price gaps.

Critical minerals are essential to many sectors, from automotive to defense and digital technology.

In their joint statement, Brussels, Tokyo and Washington also said the US and the EU had pledged to finalize a memorandum of understanding on critical minerals within 30 days.

The three signatories to the agreement aim to "significantly improve their national and economic security by jointly strengthening the resilience of supply chains," according to the statement issued after their representatives met in Washington.
