Voice of America: Supreme Court leaves former president Ilir Meta in prison

In Albania, the Supreme Court today rejected former President Ilir Meta's request to change the security measure, leaving in force his prison arrest and the "compulsory appearance" measure against MP Monika Kryemadhi.

Mr. Meta was arrested on October 21 last year, under suspicion of several criminal offenses, “corruption” in 3 cases, “money laundering” and “hiding assets”. The investigations against him include several issues, from the CEZ-DIA contract for the collection of electricity debts, to an LSI lobbying contract with a company in the United States, suspicions of favoring a local company in the field of mobile telephony, or even an Albanian-American entrepreneur, for an interconnection agreement in the field of telecommunications, suspicions of the purchase of an apartment in Tirana with unjustified money from legal sources, as well as failure to declare medical expenses.

In an audio message released after the Court’s decision, Mr. Meta reacted by considering it a “fictitious obstacle” to moving quickly towards the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He accused the Special Prosecution Office of acting under the orders of Prime Minister Edi Rama to attack the opposition and the Freedom Party, led by him, on the eve of parliamentary elections. In his audio message, he calls on Albanians to vote on May 11 to “overthrow the narco-state regime.”

His lawyer has repeatedly considered it unreasonable to keep Mr. Meta in prison, as long as there is no risk of the evidence being destroyed, which according to him has already been collected by the prosecution./ VOA
