Albanian Prime Minister Rama attacks 'flamingo' protesters

Albania's Prime Minister, Edi Rama, attacked the so-called "Flamingo Revolution" on Sunday, criticizing the actions of the crowd and referring to a group of protesters as "hajvanë" — an Albanian term that roughly means "fools" or "mindless."
In his weekly podcast, Rama said he finds it unacceptable that some protesters have called for a boycott of concerts by famous singers because they have refused to speak out publicly about the ongoing demonstrations. He also criticized what he called “online violence” and threats against people who have chosen not to take a public stand regarding the protests.
The statements come as political unrest has entered its 14th day, as Albanians filled Tirana over the weekend in the largest demonstration yet, demanding the resignation of the prime minister. Saturday's protest drew an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 participants. The demonstrations have remained peaceful, with children, the elderly and families taking part, and even including a space where children could draw and paint.
Now in its second week, the protest has transformed from a movement demanding the cancellation of a luxury resort linked to Jared Kushner into one of the largest anti-government demonstrations Albania has seen since the fall of communism in 1991.
Rama also condemned a slogan used during the protests, according to which “Albania belongs to Albanians.” He said this sounds like “implying that anyone outside of that is not welcome — just like Germany was ‘for the Germans’ and then became the ‘black sheep’ of Europe for many, many years.”
Demonstrations in support of the “Flamingo Revolution” were expected to continue both in Tirana and in other countries around the world on Sunday, with rallies planned from New York and Berlin to Vienna and London./ Translated by Alfapress.al, taken from Politico.eu
