In southeastern Turkey, one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the last century is rewriting the way we understand the rise of human civilization.

It is about Göbekli Tepe, a monumental complex that dates back about 11,500 years.

Discovered in 1994 by German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, this unique site has shocked the scientific world. Instead of a primitive hunter-gatherer society, as previously believed, the findings point to a much more complex and advanced organization.

Giant T-shaped stone columns, up to 6 meters high and weighing over 15 tons, placed in circular structures, have been discovered at this site. They are decorated with detailed animal figures and mysterious symbols, which attest to a high artistic and cultural level.

According to researchers, Göbekli Tepe is considered the oldest known religious complex in the world. What makes this discovery revolutionary is the fact that this temple was built thousands of years before the development of agriculture and permanent settlements.

This has overturned the traditional theory that agriculture came first and social and religious organization later. In contrast, Göbekli Tepe suggests that the need for faith, ritual, and collective identity may have been precisely what drove people to form communities and develop agriculture.

Its location in the region known as the Fertile Crescent, near areas where the first grains are believed to have been cultivated, strengthens this hypothesis. However, one of the greatest mysteries remains the fact that around 8000 BC, the complex was deliberately covered with earth and abandoned, for no apparent reason.

Today, UNESCO has included the site on its World Heritage List, calling it one of the most important archaeological sites on the planet. Excavations continue, with each new discovery raising more questions about the origins of civilization.

Essentially, Göbekli Tepe is not just an ancient monument, but a window into the beginning of human history, a place where, perhaps, it all began.
