The Swastika symbol, and its 12,000 year history

The swastika is a symbol that was used last century by one of the most hated people who ever lived, a symbol that now represents the murder of millions of people and one of the most destructive wars in human history. But Adolf Hitler was not the first to use this symbol. In fact, the Swastika has been used as a powerful symbol for positive purposes thousands of years before Hitler used it, across many cultures and continents.
The spiritual beginnings of the Swastika
For Hindus and Buddhists in India and other Asian countries, the swastika has been an important symbol for thousands of years. Even today this symbol can be seen everywhere in temples, buses, taxis and on book covers.
It was also used in Ancient Greece and Rome, and can be seen in the remains of the ancient city of Troy, which existed about 4,000 years ago. This symbol was also used by the ancient Druids and Celts, and it has been observed in many artifacts that have been discovered.
Likewise, the swastika was widely used by the Nordic tribes, and even by the early Christians, or the Teutonic Knights, a medieval German military order that became a Catholic religious order. But why is this symbol so important and why did Adolf Hitler decide to use it?
Positive days of the Swastika
"Svastika" is a Sanskrit word meaning "Is", "Wellbeing", "Good Existence" and "Good Fortune". But it is also known by different names in different countries, such as "Wan" in China, "Manji" in Japan, "Fylfot" in England, "Hakenkreuz" in Germany and "Tetraskelion" or "Tetragammadion" in Greece.
In 1979, the Sanskrit scholar PRSarkar said that the deeper meaning of this word is "Permanent Victory". Sarkar added that each symbol can have positive and negative meaning depending on how it is drawn.
So, in Hinduism, the Svastika written on the right hand is a symbol of Lord Vishnu and the Sun, while the Svastika written on the left hand is a symbol of the Horse and Magic. The double meaning of symbols is common in ancient traditions. Such as the symbol of the pentagram (five-pointed star), which is seen as negative when pointing downwards, and positive when pointing upwards.
A 12,000-year-old symbolism
The earliest swastika ever found was discovered in Mezine, Ukraine, carved on an ivory figurine dating back 12,000 years.
One of the earliest cultures known to have used the Swastika was a Neolithic culture in southern Europe, in the area where today's Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina lie, known as the Vinca Culture, which dates back to about 8,000 years ago.
In the Buddhist faith, the swastika is regarded as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, abundance and eternity. He is directly associated with the Buddha, and can be found carved into statues on the soles of his feet and in his heart.
It is said to contain the mind of the Buddha. On the walls of the Christian catacombs in Rome, the Swastika symbol appears next to the words "Zotiko Zotiko" which means "Life of Life". It can also be found in the windows of the mysterious Lalibela Rock churches in Ethiopia, and in various churches around the world.
In Norse Myths, Odin is represented passing through space as a spinning disc or swastika looking down through all the worlds.
In North America, the swastika was used by the Navajo people. In Ancient Greece, Pythagoras used the Swastika under the name "Tetraktis", as a symbol that connected heaven and earth, with the right arm pointing to heaven and the left arm to Earth.
The swastika was meanwhile used by the Phoenicians as a symbol of the Sun, and was a sacred symbol used by priestesses.
How is it possible that so many different countries and cultures, through many different eras, used the same symbol and with the same meaning? It is ironic and unfortunate that a symbol of life and eternity that has been considered sacred for thousands of years has become a symbol of hatred today./ Bota.al
