The US put Berisha at a crossroads and he fell into the trap he set himself!
Today should have been a day of celebration, a day of triumph for Sali Berisha and for those who have followed him over the years. But, surprisingly, Berisha was careful with every word, even every breath. Unlike some of his most enthusiastic supporters, he is well aware that this decision by the State Department has political consequences.
Donald Trump is not one to do favors without benefits. And of course, it's not just about the 11 million euros that Berisha paid to lobbying companies.
Today, Berisha is faced with two paths: Either resign, as Milorad Dodik has done, or help Edi Rama survive civic discontent and realize Ivanka Trump's project.
Although Berisha was careful to quickly spread the news in the morning without waiting for the reaction of the State Department and in a coordinated manner he sent out the deputies with the same text, the effect on the Albanians was almost zero. "Rama in prison and Berisha in prison", was heard even louder at the grand protest against the corrupt establishment, due to the conviction that Berisha, for his own sake, spares no one and nothing.
But beyond that, for five years in a row, in an attempt to protect himself, Berisha has told Albanians that being declared non grata does not prevent you from winning elections, that US decisions do not determine Albanian politics, and that America does not decide who governs Albania.
Today he is trying to sell them the opposite. But the problem is that people have believed for five years what Berisha himself has told them. After constantly devaluing the importance of the US and its influence, today he has fallen into the trap he set himself. Therefore, no one cares what America says later, and even less so when the decision, (Travel visa as he himself admitted), was bought with money and support so that Sazanin could be taken by Trump's daughter.
Many Albanians are no longer impressed by what Washington says about Berisha. Especially at a time when international attention is focused on the Trump family's investments in Albania and the protests that have accompanied these projects in Tirana.
Albanians today seem to have declared both Sali Berisha and Edi Rama politically non grata. And, as Berisha himself has said, the US does not give you votes or support in the country. The square is showing that Albanians do not want either Rama or Berisha.
In this sense, a decision allowing Berisha to obtain a visa, regardless of whether the reason is health, family, or other, has zero value, because he himself has worked for years to remove the political significance of Washington's decisions.
In the US, between Rama and Berisha, no one believes that the Trump administration would not choose the prime minister, while his family's strategic investments are at stake.
In Europe, the situation is different. The sanctions imposed by the UK for corruption and links to crime are not a political decision, but the result of its legal procedures. For many European leaders, this remains the main point of reference that makes Berisha an unwanted figure in Brussels.
Even in cases where the US has changed its approach to certain individuals, London has maintained its decisions. In the case of Bosnian Serb President Dodic, although the US lifted sanctions, Britain has kept them in force. In the case of Berisha, the fact that even with a court decision, Britain left the sanctions in force makes the matter impossible to change through a political decision.
Whatever decision the US has made regarding Berisha is worthless, because he fell into the trap he set himself./Alfapress.al
