The "fourth color" is coming to traffic lights on Europe's roads,

A group of researchers has proposed adding a new color to traffic lights – white – in order to improve road traffic in the era of autonomous vehicles. The idea comes from a team of researchers at the University of North Carolina and is based on the concept of “white phase”, a new communication system between vehicles and traffic lights via wireless technology.

Under the proposed model, the white light would not replace existing signals (red, amber, and green), but would function as a supplement. It would be activated when there are enough autonomous vehicles at an intersection and would signal drivers to follow the vehicle ahead, allowing for automatic traffic coordination.

When the number of autonomous vehicles is low, the system will automatically return to classic traffic light operation.

Simulations conducted by researchers show positive effects on traffic flow. According to them, even with just 10% autonomous vehicles, road congestion could be reduced by about 3%. In cases where this percentage reaches 30%, the traffic reduction could go up to 11%, while in more technologically advanced environments the benefits could be even greater.

However, the project faces significant challenges, mainly the high cost of infrastructure and the need for advanced communication systems between vehicles and roads.

For this reason, researchers suggest that pilot tests be first carried out in controlled areas such as university campuses, ports or logistics centers, before any implementation in urban networks.
