Can 2–3 cups of coffee a day slow down dementia?

A large US study suggests that coffee and tea consumption may be linked to better brain function and a lower risk of developing dementia. The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), involved over 131,000 healthcare workers in the US, followed for an average of 43 years.

According to the findings, participants who consumed the most caffeinated coffee were 18% less likely to develop dementia compared to those who drank the least. Similar benefits were also seen among tea drinkers, showing a slowing of cognitive decline. Moderate consumption appeared to be most beneficial: about 2–3 cups of coffee and 1–2 cups of tea per day. However, decaffeinated coffee did not show the same effect.

British dementia experts caution that these results do not prove causation and may be influenced by other health factors, such as physical activity, diet and sleep. Future studies should investigate the possible mechanisms by which bioactive compounds in coffee and tea, such as caffeine and polyphenols, may protect nerve cells.

The researchers also warn of “reverse reasoning”: People who start to experience cognitive decline may consume less caffeine, giving the impression that it reduces risk. Ultimately, the potential benefits are small and not enough to recommend daily dietary changes.
