Today, Kosovo is in a day of national mourning for the death of academic Rexhep Qosja, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 90.
The acting President and Speaker of Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, announced the day before the declaration of April 24 as a day of mourning.
"With this decision, our state expresses its respect and gratitude for a personality who gave Albanian culture knowledge, work and authority," Haxhiu said in the statement.
Qosja was buried on Thursday, in a family ceremony and without the presence of politicians or the media, as he had requested in his will.
Born on June 25, 1936 in Vuthaj (Montenegro), Qosja emerged as one of the most prominent intellectuals in Albania, building a long career in the field of literary studies and journalism.
Rexhep Qosje's work spanned several fields, including literary criticism, scientific studies, the novel, and the essay. He is the author of works that have influenced the way Albanian literature is read and interpreted.
Among his most famous works is the novel "Death Comes to Me Through Such Eyes", as well as numerous studies on the history of literature and its main figures. In his scholarly work, Qosja has extensively analyzed important authors such as Naim Frashëri and Ismail Kadare, contributing to the deepening of Albanian literary criticism.
In addition to his academic activities, Rexhep Qosja has also been recognized as one of the strongest and often controversial voices in Albanian public debates. He has addressed issues related to national identity, history, culture, and political developments in Kosovo and Albania.
From 1998 to 2000 he was the chairman of the United Democratic Movement of Kosovo, as well as a member of the Kosovo delegation to the International Conference on Kosovo in Rambouillet. He also served as a member of the General Council of Kosovo, when the country's chief administrator was Bernard Kouchner. In 2000, he was honored in Albania with the title "Honor of the Nation" and was an honorary member of the Albanian Academy of Sciences.
