Trial against Thaçi/ Former Hague prosecutor: Request for 45 years in prison for KLA commanders is unusual
Former prosecutor of the Hague Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Geoffrey Nice, has described as unusual the request of the Special Court Prosecution for sentences of 45 years in prison for four former KLA leaders.
KosovaPress states that it did not foresee that after the completion of the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, a new court would be established to investigate war crimes, much less a court that deals with a single group.
Nice, who was chief prosecutor in the Slobodan Milosevic case, said the request for such high sentences was unusual compared to previous practice. According to him, the charges against the defendants did not appear to be on the same level as some other cases at the Tribunal, where lower sentences were handed down.
He also spoke about the origins of the allegations, citing the report drafted by Dick Marty, which raised allegations of the involvement of Hashim Thaçi and others in serious crimes during and after the war.
Several former KLA members are currently on trial in the Special Court, including Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi. Meanwhile, Pjetër Shala has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, while Salih Mustafa has been sentenced to 15 years.
