Immigrants brought over 1.1 billion euros to Albania last year! Exchange rate hits remittances, euro down 30% in 10 years
The largest number of Albanian emigrants around the world is increasing remittances every year. Last year, another record was recorded, as emigrants brought to Albania through formal channels (transfers) over 1.1 billion euros, the highest figure ever recorded. Compared to 2024, the increase was around 74 million euros.
EMIGRANTS' SHIPMENTS
Year 2024 1,045 million euros
Year 2025 1,119 million euros
Difference +74 million euros
Referring to the figures of the Bank of Albania in the last quarter of 2025, which coincides with the end-of-year holidays, the threshold of 300 million euros was exceeded for the first time, as for the months of October-November-December 2025, a total of 302 million euros came in as remittances.
October-December 2024 273 million euros
October-December 2025 302 million euros
Difference +29 million euros
The entry into SEPA also has an impact on this rapid growth in numbers. From October 7, 2025, every payment that comes to the account of a citizen or business in the country will not have a commission higher than 3 euros, regardless of its value. So for all remittances that come to Albania, the cost is no more than 3 euros.
However, emigrant remittances are even higher than these values published by the central bank, if we also estimate the millions of euros that come into the country in cash, especially during periods when emigrants return to the country for vacations or various holidays.
“During the period, there was an expansion of remittances both through formal channels and in cash, reflecting the stable confidence of emigrants in the domestic economy,” the Bank of Albania report states.
The high volume of remittances, which come mainly from Italy, Greece, Germany and the US, has contributed to reducing poverty levels, but they have been hit by the exchange rate.
The European currency has shrunk by about 30% in a decade. If in 2015, the euro was exchanged for up to 140 lek, its value has dropped to 96 lek, directly devaluing the value of remittances when they are converted from euro to lek.
