Cats are officially declared national symbols in Thailand

Thailand's cabinet has approved a proposal to recognize Thai cats as national pet symbols, with the aim of preserving their heritage and boosting their economic potential, according to the Bangkok Post.
The decision, made today following the recommendations of the National Identity Committee, is based on historical and genetic evidence of their unique traits.
Thai cats have been an integral part of Thai culture for centuries, featured in traditions, folklore, and daily life.
Known for their distinctive appearance and friendly, sociable nature, they are a source of national pride.
International interest in Thai cats is growing, with breeders seeking to register purebred cats and set standards.
Currently, there are five pure Thai breeds: Suphalak, Korat, Wichienmas, Konja and Khao Manee.
Official recognition is expected to promote conservation, standardization, and wider adoption among pet lovers.
The decision is also intended to protect property rights and prevent foreign registrations. It is seen as an opportunity to stimulate creative industries, tourism and cultural exports related to Thai cats.
The Ministry of Culture supports the plan, seeing it as a key step in preserving Thailand's identity and ensuring that these iconic cats thrive both locally and globally.
