This is not a photo of integration. It is the most beautiful photo of Albanian self-deception.
A government steeped in systemic corruption appears before Europe with the smile of an exemplary student, while the European report reads in its eyes what Albanians experience every day: rampant corruption, party administration, shady elections, political pressure, propaganda, and the capture of institutions.
So, Europe is not applauding us. Europe is warning us.
And the tragic irony is this: The more the government is photographed with European flags, the further away Albania seems from European standards.
Because the EU is not a backdrop for photographs. It is not a decor for summits. It is not a diplomatic "like".
The EU is the standard. And the standard begins where the government punishes its own corruption, not where it protects its own thieves.
You cannot ask for European funds with one hand, while with the other you hold tenders, administration, media and institutions hostage. You cannot talk about integration when every international report brings you back to the same sentence: “High-level corruption remains a serious concern.”
And the opposition is equally to blame.
Because an opposition that still fails to convince the West that it is a serious, institutional, and modern alternative gives the government oxygen to continue its European theaters.
The EU and the US do not want an opposition that just screams. They want an opposition that convinces. That inspires trust. That defends the public interest more strongly than party interest.
So this photo is not a triumph.
It is a political caricature of a state that behaves like a European candidate, but continues to function with the logic of captured republics.
Europe can open the door for us. But it cannot enter us and make us a state. We will either do that ourselves, or we will continue to take pictures.
