How much does a foreign employee cost in Albania?/ On average 850 euros, but it is also associated with other risks
Hiring foreign workers is not easy, and is proving to be a costly process. From visa and work permit applications to transportation and accommodation, a business must pay around 850 euros to hire a foreign employee from abroad. In addition to the obvious costs, hiring foreign workers is often associated with significant time costs.
" In the countries where we apply to recruit workers, Albania does not have an embassy. So we have to refer to neighboring countries or further afield. To recruit girls from the Philippines, we have to refer to the embassy in Rome ," said Florjan Zekja, an entrepreneur in the manufacturing sector.
Companies' desperate attempts to cover the costs of emigration are also accompanied by other risks. A good portion of foreign workers, often before even completing a month of work in Albania, leave for the West. Other risks are related to productivity, refusal of work permits or demands by foreign workers for higher salaries than local ones.
"If we take the workers with Bangladeshi nationality, I can say that it has been a total failure. I can say with complete certainty that all those from Bangladesh who came have subsequently left ," said Florjan Zekja, an entrepreneur in the manufacturing sector.
Data from the National Employment and Skills Agency shows that the number of foreigners granted work permits is increasing year by year. The majority of them are employed in the processing industry, construction, agriculture, fishing, trade or information and communication.
