INSTAT: Trade and processing industry, the main employment sectors

Wholesale and retail trade, along with repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, proved to be the most important sector for employment in the country, accounting for 21.8% of paid employment.
Following it, the manufacturing industry represented 15.5%, while the construction sector included 9.1% of employees.
The Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) published for the first time detailed data on the demographics of enterprises in Albania for the period 2021-2023.
This report provides a clear overview of enterprise developments in the country, including the number of active, new and closed enterprises, as well as their distribution by size and economic activities.
In total, Albania registered 125,736 active enterprises in 2023. Among them, 13,346 were new enterprises, while 810 enterprises closed.
Trade remains not only the dominant sector for employment, but also for new enterprises, with 26.2% of newly created businesses belonging to this activity.
Next are the accommodation and food service sector with 13.3%, and professional, scientific and technical activities with 8.8%.
This INSTAT publication represents an important step towards analyzing the structure and development of enterprises in Albania, providing valuable data for policymakers, investors and researchers in the field of economics.
