A large fire has broken out near the military base known as Area 51 in Nevada, sparking widespread speculation from conspiracy theorists.
Footage captured by a camera placed on private property near the town of Rachel shows thick smoke rising from the classified area near Groom Lake.
The fire, which started after a lightning strike, has grown from 8,000 to over 35,000 acres. Although the fire is located about 15 miles from the base itself, it is encompassing a historic area where above-ground nuclear testing once took place, the Nevada Test Site, now known as the Nevada National Security Site.
The Department of Defense, which administers the land at Area 51 and the surrounding area, is the agency responsible for managing the fire. Meanwhile, high temperatures and low humidity are helping the flames spread through dry vegetation and pine and juniper forests.
Although authorities confirm that no buildings are threatened and no evacuations have been ordered.
Meanwhile, social media has been abuzz with conspiracy theories, with some users wondering if the fire is being used to hide evidence following recent congressional requests to inspect the secret base. One monitoring group, Skywatch Signal, posted on X: "I'm not saying anything other than it was aliens."
