Murder in Poland of Russian cartoonist who mocked Putin, suspect arrested

A serious incident has shocked Poland, where a Russian cartoonist in exile was shot dead in the middle of the street.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the suspect was using a Georgian passport, while security services are working to identify the person who may have ordered the crime.

The victim is 44-year-old Robert Kuzhovkov, known by the pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky, who had become famous for his satirical cartoons of important Russian political figures, including President Vladimir Putin.

According to reports, he was shot three times in the street. After he fell to the ground, the perpetrator approached him and shot him twice more at close range, causing his instant death.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Tusk stated that all indications point to a "political assassination," adding that if it turns out to have been ordered by Russia, then it is a very serious matter of international proportions.

The cartoonist had settled in Poland in 2021, after expressing fear of political persecution in Russia. Even in exile, he had continued his critical activity, participating in Russian opposition activities, but also openly criticizing it.

In addition to criticizing the Kremlin, he had also targeted the Ukrainian government on social media. Following these statements, a controversial Ukrainian website published his personal address, raising concerns about his safety.

The incident brings to mind previous cases of attacks on opponents of Russian rule abroad, including the notorious poisonings in the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, Moscow has consistently denied any involvement in such attacks.
