Trump announces start of Greenland talks, hopes for 'good deal'

US President Donald Trump said negotiations over Greenland have begun and expressed hope for a "good deal" for both Washington and Europe.

“We have started negotiations,” he said, answering reporters’ questions about whether he had been in contact with European leaders about Greenland. “I think it will be a good deal for everyone, a very important deal, in fact, from a national security standpoint – a very, very important deal. I think we will reach an agreement there,” he declared.

According to Trump, consensus has been reached on many issues, and Europe also wants the US to reach an agreement.

On January 21, after talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, US President Donald Trump announced that the outlines of a deal on Greenland had been released. According to Axios, the draft agreement that Rutte proposed to Trump stipulates the preservation of Danish sovereignty over Greenland and updates the terms of the 1951 agreement for the protection of the island. This would allow the US to establish military bases and “safe zones” there if NATO deems it necessary.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen later stated that Rutte did not have the authority to conduct such negotiations on behalf of Denmark. She also noted that the negotiation process had returned to the “traditional path” of diplomatic efforts.
