Trump touts surprise idea: Americans could become shareholders in Artificial Intelligence companies

US President Donald Trump has brought an unusual proposal back to the center of the debate: allowing American citizens to directly benefit from the Artificial Intelligence revolution through ownership of leading companies in the sector.
During a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described as a "great idea" the possibility of the US government owning a small share of shares in Artificial Intelligence companies, thus creating a model where citizens become partners in the profits of future technologies.
"There's something very interesting about this idea. It basically creates a partnership with the American public. It's like making them partners in this revolution. It would be a beautiful thing. It would make them rich," Trump declared.
The US president's statements have attracted the attention of the technology industry, as it is the first time he has spoken positively about a model that aims to more broadly distribute the economic benefits of Artificial Intelligence.
The debate is not new. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously supported similar ideas in discussions with US officials, suggesting mechanisms that would allow citizens to benefit from the sector's rapid growth.
Meanwhile, US Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed an even more ambitious scheme, under which citizens would gain direct ownership in the largest Artificial Intelligence companies through a special tax paid on shares.
According to industry experts, a more realistic scenario would be the creation of a public investment fund, where companies would contribute 1% to 5% of their shares to ensure long-term benefits for citizens.
Trump also linked the proposal to the global race for dominance in Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing that the US must maintain an advantage over China.
“We are looking at ways for the American people to benefit from the success of Artificial Intelligence. We are ahead of China and ahead of the rest of the world in this area, and we want to stay ahead,” he said. The president’s statements are expected to fuel the debate over how the wealth that Artificial Intelligence could create in the coming decades should be distributed, between those who seek broader benefits for society and those who support the traditional model of private ownership.
