A serious incident occurred this evening on the island of Xios in the Aegean.
According to Greek media, the incident occurred after a collision between a Coast Guard ship and a speedboat carrying migrants.
According to information from the Coast Guard, a speedboat attempted to approach Mersinidi, Xios, to disembark migrants. It was then spotted by a Coast Guard vessel and a pursuit ensued during which the two vessels collided. Coast Guard sources report that their officers suffered minor injuries.
A senior official from the Ministry of Maritime Transport confirmed 14 victims, while saying that the speedboat was suspected of carrying 30 to 35 illegal immigrants.
A search and rescue operation is currently underway in the wider area.
According to an update from the Emergency Medical Service, rescue teams have transported 18 irregular migrants (including a pregnant woman) and 2 Coast Guard officers to the hospital.
It is suspected that some of the victims were shot with a gun while others died as a result of the collision. The prosecution has gone to the area and is collecting evidence while helicopters and coast guard speedboats are searching for others injured or killed.
