Meeting with Xi Jinping, China officially confirms Trump's visit to Beijing

China has officially confirmed that Donald Trump will visit the country this week to meet with Xi Jinping.

The trip comes at the invitation of the Chinese president, China's foreign ministry said.

Despite Trump himself saying that the visit - postponed from early April - would take place, Beijing had not confirmed the meeting until now.

Relations between the US and China are strained as a result of the war in Iran, with the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatening China's energy security.

The US Treasury also imposed sanctions on Chinese-based companies it has accused of aiding Iran's military efforts, just days before Trump's visit.
