Away from the public eye since the first attacks on Iran, Netanyahu: Mojtaba

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he believes Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is alive.

Khamenei has not appeared publicly since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - who was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes at the start of the war - raising questions about his status.

The new supreme leader is believed to have been seriously injured in the attack that also killed five other family members.

In an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, Netanyahu said: "I think Mojtaba Khamenei is alive. It's hard to say what his condition is."

"He's hiding in some bunker or some secret place and I think he's trying to exercise his authority. I don't think he has the same authority that his father had," he said.

Iran's Fars news agency claimed yesterday that Khamenei met with a military chief and gave "new guiding measures to pursue operations and confront opponents decisively."
