"If Russia is ready to stop the attacks, we will be ready to respond in the same way," Zelensky in favor of a ceasefire with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday he stands behind a proposal made to Russia for a ceasefire, provided that Moscow stops all attacks on energy infrastructure.
Zelenskiy said in his evening video address that the proposal had been conveyed to Moscow via the United States. He also added that work was continuing with American negotiators on security guarantees, which he described as key to a lasting peace.
“If Russia is ready to stop attacks on our energy infrastructure, we will be ready to respond in kind,” he said. “This proposal has been conveyed to the Russian side through the Americans.”
Zelenskiy last week proposed a ceasefire under similar conditions for the Easter holiday, which in the Orthodox faith, dominant in both Russia and Ukraine, falls this Sunday.
But after the new Russian attacks, he said Russia had responded to the proposal by using Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
Moscow reacted coolly to Zelenskiy's proposal last week, saying it favors a comprehensive peace agreement.
In his statement on Monday, following an overnight attack on the Black Sea port of Odessa that killed three people, Zelenskiy said Russia appeared unwilling to accept an Easter ceasefire.
"We have repeatedly proposed to Russia a ceasefire at least for Easter, a special time of year," he said. "But for them, all times are the same. Nothing is sacred."
