Fourteen arrested in Turkey over ski resort tragedy

At least 14 suspects have been arrested - and eight of them have been referred to prosecutors - in the investigation into a fire that engulfed a ski resort hotel in northern Turkey that killed 78 people.
The investigation is focused on the hotel managers, rescue teams and the municipality of Bol, to which the ski center area belongs.
Today, as Anadolu reports, the owner of the luxury Grand Kartal Hotel and his son-in-law were arrested. Among those arrested are the deputy mayor of Bolu, the deputy fire chief, the hotel manager, his electrician and an architect.
The fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the Kartalkaya ski resort hotel. The investigation revealed a number of shortcomings as well as insufficient security and alarm measures.
Experts who examined the scene of the tragedy said there was no alarm system, no smoke detectors, no water sprinklers. There was also no access for firefighters to one side of the 12-story building.
According to Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya, 238 guests, mostly families with children, were in the hotel that night. Entire families were destroyed by the fire, which raged for hours before being brought under control.
