US, Iran and mediators discuss electronic signing of deal, Strait of Hormuz in focus

The United States, Iran and international mediators are considering signing a memorandum of understanding remotely on Wednesday, instead of a physical signing scheduled for Friday, Axios reports, citing diplomatic sources. According to these sources, if the parties agree, the document could be signed electronically and some parts of the agreement, particularly those related to the Strait of Hormuz, would take effect immediately.

Diplomats say the acceleration of the deadlines is aimed at opening the strait more quickly, as the parties are said to have already reached a preliminary agreement on the issue. Another factor influencing the discussions is political pressure on the White House to publish the text of the agreement. According to sources, Iran has requested that the contents not be made public until after the official signing, while the US has not yet confirmed a deadline for publication.

Meanwhile, a diplomatic source has suggested that the text of the agreement could be published as early as Wednesday, but no final decision has been made yet on changing the signing date. Despite the discussions on the format of the signing, a meeting between the American and Iranian delegations is expected to take place on Friday in Switzerland, where senior representatives of both countries will lead the talks. The meeting is expected to focus on the start of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program.

Various sources have also given different versions of whether the agreement was already electronically signed earlier this week, leaving the formal approval process still unclear. According to the White House, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the implementation of the agreement will only begin after the official signing, but this deadline could be accelerated if the document is signed earlier than the planned date.
